Picupthesesame is a non-binary organism based in Tokyo and London. We focus on female/queer/sinophone practitioners and artists in contemporary research, promote artistic projects in visual cultures. Through our artistic promotion, picupthesesame aims to share a mutual support art space and decompose the ubiquitous hegemonic masculinity.

JINJIN XU




As Jinjin XU leads us through her exhibition, "shelter" is a term that she frequently refers to. Indeed, the materials showcased in the exhibition, such as gauze curtains and draperies, evoke feelings of warmth, security, and enclosure. However, Jinjin emphasized that she did not want this space to be solely a shelter for women to escape from reality. Instead, her intention was to encourage women to reflect upon themselves and to enable the audience, as outsiders, to bear witness to the existence of these elements.




Liang Shuni, born in Guiyang, Guizhou in 1989, has a keen sensitivity towards both everyday life and people, and possesses a diverse perspective. Her creative expression is triggered by reality, but her wandering thoughts often lead her into a world between truth and illusion. Through her observation of subtle details, psychological analysis, and essential questioning, her paintings and sculpture installations sometimes give viewers a sense of surrealism, as if they are traveling back and forth in time and space.



Maggie Menghan Chen (b. 1998, Beijing) lives and works in London. Chen works across sculpture, installation and print-making in a quasi-archeological approach. Her work serves as evidence, leaving clues for a lost or speculative history, which hovers between facts, historical narratives and fantasy fictions. Chen extracts nature’s symbols and archetypes, digitally restores and transforms them to juxtapose with found objects. Through setting a tone in the past, her practice reflects upon the social construct of memory and its boundaries between reality and stimulation in the digital age.




Tang Han is an artist living and working in Berlin. Through diverse artistic mediums ranging from film to video, to installation, text, and photography, her practice critically revolves around questions of representation and meaning based on her own experience of cultural collision. In recent years, she has been working primarily with time-based media to create new narratives. By revisiting and investigating the historical archive and appropriating images from pop- and consumer culture, fragmented elements of media are represented in a different light.




Shiyu Duan is a multi-disciplinary artist who observe the everyday and extract the wondering. She presents works embodying discourse around the theme of self-awareness and the vulnerability of human being. She believes, as long as people live in this world, the life activity of human being is a long-term consumption. It is a process that requires you to consume labour, energy and sprit to maintain the desire to continue to explore. Living for everyone is a long-lasting, turbulent movement. People always feel forceless when they dealing with it.




Chán started at Jiaying’s dinner table and developed through many conversations over food. The process of making this publication was filled with heartfelt moments - it started with a simple question of: tell me about your relationship with food - and the stories just came along. It was no surprise to us that everyone has their own stories relating to food, and their unique attachment to it. As with the diasporic bodies, food often carries memories of a distant place, familiar or strange - it is a language that drifting souls communicate with, and when we are lost, food will always lead us to the way home.





YANG Qin-hua, also known as 羊喘兒 or 楊秦華, is a digital artist/photographer based in Tokyo, Japan. She is currently a Phd student at Department of Integrated Design at Tama Art University. YANG specializes in different digital media creations; in recent years, her research and creations are mainly based on Internet archives and related topics such as machine vision, human activities and video production.






Peishan Huang is studying fine art at Maryland Institute College of Art. Most of her time is devoted to photographing and cooking, and her works involve photography, sculpture and installation. Recently, she has begun to engage in non-systematic "daily trash collection", trying to get close to media and materials through fragments of daily life and improvisation experiments.





Miroir Project, established in August 2020, focuses on exploring talented female photographers in China, and is committed to providing them with opportunities to exhibit their works.

In February 2021, Miroir Project held the first Female Photographer Competition, and now they are preparing for the touring exhibition, which will display the works of the 30 finalists in the competition. The exhibition will be held in Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai. Moreover, they also cooperated with a new exhibition hall in Australia to regularly distribute the female photography works released by the platform, giving more girls the opportunity to exhibit overseas.





Xiaoyu is currently studying Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art. Hiding in a giant "turtle shell" like chelonian, she observes the inner contour of the outside world, gently and slowly, while intermittently insisting on creating tortoise-related series of works. Like some other artists who use self-portraits to express themselves, xiaoyu chose Wu Gui (tortoise) as her mirror image instead.





Wang Lu is a Tokyo-based photographer who graduated with a BA from the Musashino Art University and currently studying in the advanced art expression direction of the inter-media art department of Tokyo University of the Arts. Her works focus on the alternation between present and past time, telling the differences between individuals and groups under the huge internal and external changes.
